With the sun appearing in the mornings here and there I thought I’d throw it back to how I started down the wildlife photography angle of my career. Walking to the beach as well as along the river.
Well, that and I need to get some more exercise but it’s difficult as my nerve pain has been kinda problematic this year (which is also reminding me of how I got started down this road hahaha…)
As usual I decided to do this over Labor Day weekend – which, if we’re being insightful, turned out a bit “people-y” for me so they were kind of short mornings. (btw, when did it become OK to like bow and arrow fish on a public beach? Is that a thing or just a crackpot? So much for catch and release with that nonsense)
Anyhow some fun looks at birds as the sun first came over.

The first image is my favorite of these Brown Pelicans. A couple of them were fishing in the surf zone and being pretty lazy about taking off (in fact one got grabbed and pulled over the falls just before this but was fine). Anyhow, I love the white splash disturbance where you can see how its belly and feet contacted the top of the wave more than just a “push” with its feet.
Some other fun shots with details of Brown Pelicans and a Long-Billed Curlew.

Later I ended up at the San Diego River mouth and came across a fun Yellow-Crowned Night Heron. I got a kick out of the judgmental side eye shot.
The image with the fisherman speaks to me about Katie’s “In Plain Sight” theming for the blog (and upcoming coffee table book… more on that later). I have no idea whether he saw the bird or not so I shouldn’t really like have an opinion I suppose. But, just kind fit to what I see: there’s a lot of cool nature out there if you open your eyes to it.
Lastly, speaking of eyes, check out the glare from this Osprey atop an aging boatyard crane…
Hope you enjoyed the photos and thanks for the read!
