A first for me: Risso’s Dolphins.

I’ve read up on these but hadn’t come across them previously. These are occasional visitors off San Diego and are enjoyed for their unique look.

Born dark these Risso’s Dolphins scars don’t re-pigment instead creating the white patterning unique to each animal.

All of the Risso’s images made me happy – but – the three with the Dolphin kelping were my favorite. The added contrast of the kelp as well as the near mirrored surface give them something extra.

Below:

Not my best picture ever, but an animal I keep trying to capture in it’s elegance: a flying fish!

Hope you enjoyed the photos and thanks for the read!

7-23-25: La Jolla, Quivira, Whale Watching

male sea lion for blog post

//  In Plain Sight Blog with Nate Collins Photo  //

Another few days without anything that truly screams “next level” but there’s a few in here that are growing on me and some interesting behaviors to see either way.

Images below are posted at 1060×706 at 72dpi. Full size images available for printing / image licensing.

Images Above:

First a couple shots from the boat earlier this week. I’m not sure I have a lot of nice shots of Shearwaters, so here’s a Sooty Shearwater (I’m 99% sure – but I’m not a huge bird person).

Then a shot of a leaping Common Dolphin in front of the San Diego shoreline with the mountains in the extreme background.

After the boat got back I went to Quivira Jetty and snapped a couple shots, although very, very far away of Black Skimmers doing their thing. Skimming. It’s impressive to see them do this at speed. Hopefully they’ll decide to be on the same side of the river as me next time.

Found a bit of a hole in the clouds today down at the cove. There was a big hole over my head when I got in my office around 5am, but it was drifting the opposite way that I thought.

I never got direct light, or even diffused color coming down onto the water. However, there were some gaps in the clouds and just enough variation in cloud height that I got a few minutes here and there with clouds diffusing light down onto the cove.

I was shooting really slow shutter due to the low light so Sea Lions that were just cruising was the goal. In fact I was playing with ISO more than I usually do as well as you can see in the captions below the photos.

Either way I think a couple of these are pretty fun and are I’ll probably process them onto the site.

For those of us who hadn’t heard No Sky July previously, I have another one sent to me by a photographer / naturalist / captain I know: Fogust… And I looked back through some of my shots from last year and ya, we had a lot of morning fog hahaha… I’m trying though.
